Red Sky Performance is Canada’s leading company in contemporary Indigenous performing art.
This new production: BACKBONE, has been selected to open the 18th CINARS Biennale in Montreal on November 13th, 2019 at Monument-National. Before that, the company will tour The Netherlands during January and February 2019.
The performance is a combination of traditional and contemporary dance connecting the past with the present.
BACKBONE ferociously brings to life the electricity, circuitry, and impulses of a sentient land as it emerges from millions of years of restlessness. With powerful live music and highly physical solos, duets, and ensembles, the performers interpret nature’s spine and landscapes to embody Indigenous mapping and Western cartography.
“The idea that there is a 'spine' to our continents is an Indigenous concept as old as living memory; it reveals our way of perceiving and mapping land as alive, sentient, and intact. Through dance and music, I wanted to show that the rocky spine of the Americas has life, circuitry, electricity, and dynamic impulses - much like the human spine. For us, there is a strong connection between the earth's backbone and a human one. We are inseparable,” says Artistic Director Sandra Laronde.
On 22nd February, the show will be close to den Haag; in Rijswijk. See all dates and locations in the attached flyer.
