    On Friday 17th June, NCCC Executive Director Julie Allen was Master of Ceremonies at the launch of "Building Your Business in the Netherlands". This event was organized by the Consulate-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency and Brainport Eindhoven, and took place at the MaRS Discovery District located in Toronto.

    More than 50 companies registered for the event to hear about the advantages of choosing the Netherlands as a hub for their European expansion. Opened by Anne van Leeuwen, the Netherlands Consul General in Toronto, the first presentation explained the services that the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency can offer to Canadian companies (which are free and confidential). Following that, the Mayor of Eindhoven spoke about the attractions of the region and then his team elaborated on the great Soft-Landing program which the Brainport Region has to offer.

    The last part of the formal program was a panel discussion with the CEO of Contax, a large SAP player and the CFO of Northland Power, who have built large wind farms in the North Sea. From them we learned first-hand about their experience when entering the European market and some of the cultural differences that they found. This was really valuable information for the audience.

    During the busy networking event, Andrea Merluzzi, National Manager of Business Development at Air Canada who sponsored the event, performed the draw of the Air Canada ticket to The Netherlands. Bill Bulham was the lucky winner!

    The  Netherlands-Canada Chamber of Commerce  (NCCC) provides seminars, events and a networking forum for business people and professionals with Canadian interests. Members interact on a regular basis, discuss common business issues and help to promote the economic and social interests of its members.

    The NCCC currently seeks to recruit new Board members who will reflect the composition of the Chamber and the needs and aspirations of its current and future members. In particular, the organization would like to attract senior Board candidates with experience in finance, strategy and visioneering.   

    In addition,  potential Board members will possess a complementary leadership combination of skills and attributes, including governance and business planning experience. Above all, Board members should display the drive and enthusiasm to contribute to the Chamber with demonstrated commitment through participation in events; whether as a Board member or a volunteer.

    The Board meets two-four times per year as needed. One meeting is face-to-face. The rest are via conference call.

    Expansion into the Netherlands is a natural extension of their existing presence in Belgium as well as their planned entry into Luxembourg

    • Canada's premium department store banner Hudson's Bay and off-price banner Saks OFF 5TH expected to launch first stores in summer 2017 utilizing HBC's existing European platform
    • Plans to open up to 20 stores over the next 24 months
    • Expansion is expected to create approximately 2,500 store jobs and 2,500 construction jobs in key Dutch cities
    • Anticipates 300 million Euros in capital investments, with majority to be funded by landlords

    Hudson's Bay Company ("HBC" or the "Company") (TSX:HBC) is pleased to announce that it is expanding its European presence with plans for up to 20 new stores in the Netherlands over the next 24 months. The Company has finalized and is in the process of finalizing long term leases for select, sought after locations. The first stores are expected to launch in the summer of 2017 and operate under the Hudson's Bay banner as well as the Saks OFF 5TH banner. The expansion into the Netherlands will build on HBC Europe's existing infrastructure and will utilize the same platforms such as information technology, procurement and digital support. Build out of the stores will be funded primarily by the relevant landlords and HBC will invest in the operational aspects of the stores including merchandising and employees.

    February 29, 2016 - Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

    The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of International Trade, and Cecilia Malmström, European Commissioner for Trade, today released the following statement:

    “Canada and the European Commission are very pleased to announce that the legal review of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement [CETA] English text has been completed.

    “As part of the legal review, modifications were made to the investment chapter, further to discussions between European Union [EU] and Canadian officials. With these modifications, Canada and the EU will strengthen the provisions on governments’ right to regulate; move to a permanent, transparent and institutionalized dispute-settlement tribunal; revise the process for the selection of tribunal members, who will adjudicate investor claims; set out more detailed commitments on ethics for all tribunal members; and agree to an appeal system.

    “We have responded to Canadians, EU citizens, and businesses with a fairer, more transparent, system.

    “These modifications reflect our desire to reform investment protection and dispute-resolution provisions and to continue working together to improve the process, including working with other trading partners to pursue the establishment of a multilateral investment tribunal, a project to which the EU and Canada are firmly committed.

    “Canada and the European Commission will now complete the translation and review of the text in French and the 21 other EU treaty languages.

    “Once finalized, we will focus on the swift ratification of CETA so that individuals and businesses, both large and small, are able to benefit from the opportunities offered by this gold-standard agreement. We are confident that CETA will be signed in 2016 and will enter into force in 2017.”

    Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

    Starting from 15 March 2016, visa-exempt foreign nationals will have to fill out an online Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) form and pay an administrative fee of C$7 before entering Canada.

    US citizens and foreign nationals with valid visas are exempt. The eTA is also not required for entry to Canada by land and sea. Approximately 50 visa-exempt countries, including the Netherlands, will be affected.

    The pre-travel authorisation system, similar to that of the United States, will send an automated e-mail upon completion of the form. Permission to enter Canada is valid for five years or until passport expiry.

    On January 5, 2016, Minister Chrystia Freeland announced a new program to increase the competitiveness of Canadian companies. CanExport will provide up to $50 million over five years in direct financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Canada seeking to develop new export opportunities, particularly in high-growth priority markets and sectors.

    The Netherlands will hold the Presidency of the Council of the EU from 1 January to 30 June 2016. The key principles of the Dutch Presidency will be: a Union focused on essentials, innovative growth and jobs, and connecting with citizens.

    What does the Presidency do?

    The main job of the Presidency is to mediate and seek compromises about decisions that the 28 EU member states have to make together. It also mediates between EU institutions like the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Parliament.

    The Presidency draws up the agenda of the Council of the EU and chairs its meetings. The Dutch ministers chair the ministerial councils that concern their policy areas.

    The European Council is made up of the heads of government or heads of state, and is chaired by the permanent Council president. The Foreign Affairs Council is chaired by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. So the Presidency does not chair the meetings of these two Councils.

    The Presidency of the Council of the EU rotates every six months. Member states take turns holding the Presidency. This will be the Netherlands' 12th term. The last time the Netherlands held the Presidency was in 2004.

    Themes of the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU

    During its Presidency, the Netherlands will be able to steer the course of EU legislative and political processes. The Presidency also provides an opportunity to spotlight issues that are important to the Netherlands. The themes of the Dutch Presidency are:

    • A Union focused on essentials

      The Netherlands believes the EU must focus on areas that will make Europe stronger, such as prosperity, freedom and security. The EU should not involve itself in matters that the member states are perfectly capable of dealing with themselves, like health care, education, pensions and taxes.
    • A Union focused on growth and jobs

      The Netherlands sets great store by creating new jobs and promoting an innovative economy in the EU. The Netherlands wants to achieve this by, for instance:
      • removing obstacles for companies that want to do business in other member states;
      • concluding trade agreements;
      • protecting workers more effectively against exploitation and unfair competition.
    • A Union that connects with citizens

      The EU must connect with its citizens, so that they can identify with EU decisions. The government will give citizens, companies and civil society organisations an active role in the Presidency.

    On 28 January 2015, foreign minister Bert Koenders sent a letter to the House of Representatives explaining the key themes of the Dutch Presidency.

    Meetings in Amsterdam

    The formal meetings of the EU ministers will take place in Brussels and Luxembourg. But the Netherlands will also organise various informal meetings in our own country. Meetings of ministers will be held in the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. Meetings at official level will take place at Marineterrein, the former navy base in Amsterdam. In addition, the European Commission and members of the European Parliament will pay working visits in The Hague.

    The Netherlands-Canada Chamber of Commerce (NCCC) is a non-profit organization promoting trade, investment, industry, commercial services and cultural affairs between Canada and the Netherlands.

    Job profile

    The Marketing Manager works under authority granted by the Board of Directors. The Marketing Manager is responsible for all financial, operational, administrative and legal aspects of the daily organizational management of the Chamber, which includes but is not limited to achieving budget targets, public relations and marketing, supervision of (paid and volunteer) program staff, and business operations in accordance with standard business practice.


    • Oversee the growth and development of the membership base.
    • Oversee and support event management, guidance and direction, follow up and analysis for continued improvement as needed.
    • Assist the Board by maintaining and promoting the vision and mission of the Chamber and in its achieving goals and objectives.
    • Oversee all financial, management and administration aspects of the Chamber.
    • Oversee and support staff and develop short and long term staff development plans.
    • Implement the Chamber’s Board-approved policies and implement other Board and Chamber plans in a timely way as they relate to the Chamber’s operating budget, fundraising activities, programs, membership development and communication.
    • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in cultural, economic and political environments that impact Canadian-Dutch business and trade.
    • Identify and cultivate Canadian and Netherlands partner organizations for mutual program benefit.
    • Keep the Board and Board Chairman fully informed on the condition of the Chamber and other important factors affecting the health of the organization.
    • Involve each Board member at an optimum level. Stimulate each to reach the highest potential as a Board member.
    • Assist the Chairman in planning the agenda and materials for the Board meetings and Board strategic planning retreats.
    • Implement marketing timeline and communications for the mission and goals.
    • Establish and strengthen working relationships with Canadian and Dutch partners.
    • Oversee the development and production of all Chamber printed material and publications.

    Skills and requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required such as Business Administration, Public Administration, Public Policy or related field. Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent experience in related fields will be considered.
    • Leadership, sense of vision and ability to motivate others.
    • Extensive knowledge of finance and budgeting.
    • Flexible and able to work evenings and weekends as needed.
    • Preferably experience and knowledge of non-profit accounting and financial analysis.
    • Strong ability to work with and support the Board of Directors.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor.
    • Strong verbal and written communication and listening skills in Dutch and English.
    • Strong analytical skills.
    • Demonstration of initiative, creativity and follow-through.
    • Ability to multi-task and have a strong sense of organization, planning and able to manage time well.
    • High level of energy and enthusiasm.

    Working conditions

    • Appointment: Full-time
    • Remuneration: €2.000 to €3.000 (depending on experience) + target-based commission
