    Canada is, and always has been, a trading nation. Since our first trade commissioner arrived in Australia in 1895 to increase Canadian exports, the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) has evolved into a now unmatched network of over 1,000 business-savvy experts in 160 cities worldwide who help Canadian businesses trade, grow and succeed.

    The Department of Trade and Commerce was established in 1892 under Minister Mackenzie Bowell, who led a successful trade delegation to Australia the next year. While in Australia, he heard calls for Canada to station a commercial agent in the region to answer “constant enquiries” about export opportunities for Canadian companies. 

    John LarkeJohn Larke (pictured 1893: From Oshawa Museum's Archival Collection A000.1.49a), a former newspaper owner from Oshawa, Ontario, departed Canada for Sydney, Australia, in December 1894 and arrived on January 8, 1895. He was Canada’s first permanent trade commissioner and, thus, first commercial representative abroad. Upon arrival, he was responsible for developing the market for Canadian products in Australia and New Zealand as well as developing a list of Canadian suppliers, promoting sales to the region and reporting back to Ottawa on market conditions.

    “I know of no man in Canada so well fitted for this position as Larke,” declared Bowell, who became prime minister of Canada in 1894. “He is an enthusiast on the extension of Canadian trade…He also has a happy aptitude for public speaking and could do much good in addressing boards of trade and other bodies,” says O. Mary Hill in her book, Canada’s Salesman to the World: The Department of Trade and Commerce, 1892‑1939.

    And so began the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS).

    Currently we are hiring Front-Line Customer Services Representative for our food truck on Saturdays (9:00 AM – 4:00 PM) in downtown Lelystad (Flevoland, The Netherlands).     On the 9th of December 2019, The Hague hosted the launch of the headquarters for the world’s largest AI research network CLAIRE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe). CLAIRE was established in response to the pressing need for excellence in AI research and innovation that ensures that Europe remains competitive in AI and its applications. With CLAIRE, European partners are raising the bar significantly in terms of investment in talent, research, technology and innovation in AI.

    CLAIRE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe)

    “CLAIRE is the world’s largest network of AI research laboratories, and we are very happy and proud to have our headquarters in The Hague. Considering The Hague’s reputation as the city of Peace and Justice, The Hague, and the Netherlands in general, are an ideal home base for CLAIRE, which will shape the way AI is used in Europe. The Netherlands is a hotbed for AI research and innovation in Europe, and home to a large number of internationally leading experts in AI.”, says Dr. Holger Hoos, Professor of Machine learning at Leiden University and the co-initiator of CLAIRE.

    The CLAIRE headquarters in The Hague will support CLAIRE activities in Europe, coordinating the work of existing CLAIRE offices in Prague (CZ), Saarbrücken (DE), Rome (IT) and Oslo (NO), as well as offices soon to be opened in Brussels (BE), Zürich (CH), Paris (FR) and Cork (IE). The CLAIRE office in The Hague will also place special focus on AI in the public sector, AI computing and data infrastructure, and the development of a focus on AI for social good.

    CLAIRE & InnovationQuarter

    With the establishment of CLAIRE, the greater Rotterdam – The Hague area is strengthening its position as a “real life testing ground” for AI. This region has a unique position because excellent academic knowledge is concentrated here with promising areas of application for AI. Consider, for example, contributing to the energy transition in the port area, solving global food problems with horticulture and working on life sciences & health technology of the future. NCCC member InnovationQuarter will be involved in Claire as a partner for developing use-cases in collaborative projects with businesses and knowledge institutes.

    InnovationQuarter is currently working on an economic exploration of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Zuid-Holland, which will be completed early next year. For this we are in full discussion with companies and knowledge partners in the region. Ultimately, we aim to identify opportunities for collaboration on the implementation of AI in practice, and what knowledge and expertise (public and private) we already have in-house for this. When we start working on this next year, CLAIRE can play an important role.

    Who we are looking for:
    -Post-secondary education in a major field of (interior) design/engineering
    -Minimum of 3 years of experience in a relevant field of design
    -Experience with 3D design of interiors, trade shows and exhibits
    -Able to prioritize, handle multiple tasks and work well with deadlines
    -Strong communication and presentation skills
    -Knowledge of manufacturing and design principles with a strong emphasis on human factors and UI/UX development and marketing.

    On Tuesday 17 September 2019, a Canadian delegation accompanied His Worship Mayor Jim Watson from Ottawa, visited The Hague Security Delta (HSD). The visit was in the context of promoting and continuing the collaboration between both countries which gives businesses the facility to participate in a Soft landing program. A continuation agreement was signed by Mayor Watson, NCCC member Chris van Voorden (InnovationQuarter) and Joris den Bruinen (HSD) to strengthen this collaboration for the future. The visit was organised in close cooperation with InnovationQuarter, Invest Ottawa and the Embassy of Canada.

    The programme included several introductions from the organising partners, a presentation by former soft landing participant Magnet Forensics and an open discussion on further collaboration between Ottawa and the greater Rotterdam-The Hague area. Inspired by Mayor Watson’s visit, the partners are motivated to support more businesses to explore market opportunities across the ocean and participate in one of the soft landing programs.

    Soft Landing Programme

    The Canada-Netherlands Cyber and Security Technologies Soft Landing Platform was set up in 2013 by Invest Ottawa, the Dutch Embassy in Ottawa, the Canadian Embassy to the Netherlands, InnovationQuarter and HSD. This soft landing program supports businesses from Ottawa to set up an office here in the Netherlands and Dutch business to set up office in Ottawa. HSD SME partners interested in exploring the North American market get a unique market introduction for a trial period. Based in Ottawa, Canada’s national hub for the cyber, defence and security sectors, the location offers easy access to the entire North American market. Canadian SMEs get the opportunity to land in the greater Rotterdam-The Hague area.

    By participating in the program, each firm will be provided with access to key resources and support by Invest Ottawa and HSD to build a strong regional network in the market and make strategic connections. Whilst providing a low risk entry trial to Canadian and Dutch companies entering a new international market, ultimately the program is conceived to help firms possibly set up a permanent presence in the market.

    Pierre-Luc Desgagné

    The Executive Council of Québec have appointed Pierre-Luc Desgagné as Québec’s Delegate General in Brussels. He will take up his post on 17 June 2019.

    Mr Desgagné succeeds Michel Audet, who has held the position since December 2014. Mr Audet has been appointed Personal Representative of the Québec Premier for the Francophonie and Special Envoy for Africa.  

    Biography of Pierre-Luc Desgagné 

    Pierre-Luc Desgagné is a partner in the business law group at the law firm Langlois and a member of the firm’s Board of Directors. He has extensive experience in the governmental and political spheres and recognised expertise in crisis management and public affairs. He has acquired a profound understanding of issues relating to social acceptability for development projects. He was previously deputy chief of staff to former Québec Premier Lucien Bouchard and a member of senior management at Hydro-Québec, where he was Vice President – Corporate Affairs and Secretary General among other positions.

    Mr Desgagné holds a bachelor’s degree in Law from Laval University and is a member of the Québec Bar.

    NCCC member kubikhttps://thinkubik.com/ was fundamental in the creation of 5 of the 7 galleries in the new Royal Alberta Museum. Each gallery holds unique notable features and required its own specialized approach.

    The 320 pound rock, Manitou Asinîy is of great spiritual significance to Indigenous peoples in Alberta and Saskatchewan. It is located in a stand-alone space on the second floor of the museum and is designed to encourage reflection and quiet discussion. The Iron Creek meteorite, a round pitted stone made from the purest iron, is believed to hold great spiritual power. Viewed from a certain angle, the stone reveals the profile of a face believed by some native groups to resemble the Creator. Due to it’s sacred nature to the indigenous people, pictures or video are not allowed in this area of the museum, but many come by to pay homage and leave spiritual offerings.

    The 4.5-billion-year-old stone is symbolic of RAM’s commitment to weave Indigenous stories throughout all six of its human history galleries. As lead fabricator and installer of the environment and the sacred stone, kubik’s experience with sacred artifacts enabled special care and accommodation for the culturally sensitivity required of this program. kubik team members were honored to participate in the smudging and pipe ceremony during the installation of this spiritually significant artifact.

    As principal fabricator, kubik spent the last four years of the seven-year project embedded with the RAM and the other partners of the gallery design team offering; design build, fabrication and project management expertise to many of the intricate and complex galleries and exhibitions throughout the 127,700 square metres (419,000 square feet) building. Sam Kohn, President of kubik commented, “our significant connections to vendors and specialist tradespeople, along with our extensive experience in large scale fabrication projects bringing Human History and First Peoples content to life, allowed us to take on a wide scope of activities and projects within this massive enterprise.”

    The museum includes 24,990 square metres (82,000 square feet) of exhibition space – twice the size of the former museum. The wide-ranging collection and research activities maintained by the RAM demonstrates its dedication to collecting, preserving, researching, interpreting, and exhibiting objects of interest that capture the rich history of Alberta. There are more than 2.4 million objects in the Royal Alberta Museum collection with more than 5,300 objects on display throughout the newly invented galleries.

    Last week, Toronto based MaRS and NCCC member InnovationQuarter signed an MoU, signifying the start of a collaboration. The two organisations will explore options for setting up a market expansion programme in support of cleantech businesses looking to set foot on the ground in the market across the ocean.

    The common goal of MaRS and InnovationQuarter is to set up a reciprocal program that enables entrepreneurs and innovators in the cleantech space to gain access to the Dutch or Canadian market for companies looking to accelerate their growth in the region across the ocean. This  program will assist growth-stage cleantech ventures with market expansion through partnerships and funding opportunities in either the Toronto or the West Holland region.

    MaRS works with startups and scale-ups and offers a range of services that help founders increase revenue and fuel their competitive advantage. With an extensive network that spans over 1,200 companies across the country, MaRS can help turn breakthrough ideas into products and services with global impact. MaRS is North America’s largest urban innovation hub occupying 1.5 million square feet in downtown Toronto. It is a diverse community of more than 120 tenants, including research labs and global tech companies, each selected to create a community that is collaborating on real solutions to important problems.

    The collaboration will give Dutch companies access to the services of MaRs, such as advisory support and connections to talent, access to investors as well as connections to partners.

    InnovationQuarter will assist Canadian cleantech companies in their business expansion into Europe and accelerate their growth. This collaboration should result in a market expansion program similar to previously set up programmes, such as the BOSteRDAM program, which is set up in collaboration  with Greentown Labs in Boston. Here foreign companies are offered the opportunity to spend two weeks working in our region, engaging with locals as a local.

    The specifics of the collaboration will be determined by both MaRS and InnovationQuarter over the coming months. If your company is considering expansion to the Canadian market, please get in touch, we would be glad to discuss the possibilities the collaboration can offer.
